Shaun Loney is knowledgeable. Quoting Jane Jacobs he says, “Poverty has no cause. As darkness is the absence of light and cold is the absence of heat, so poverty is the absence of prosperity. Poverty isn’t about low income people; it is about the need to change the system.”
Shaun Loney is a knowledgeable social innovator. He will speak at the Sunday morning worship service at Trinity United Church on January 19; present a programme that afternoon about why churches should involve themselves with social enterprise, and on Monday morning, January 20, host a conversation about “Homelessness and Social Enterprise.”
On the Sunday afternoon there will be reports about how congregations are achieving their missions in entrepreneur ways. For example, in Toronto, St. Dennis United Church has a social enterprise called, “Build Up.” Those hired must have a criminal record. This illustrates how a social enterprise can give those with a barrier to employment a second chance.
On Monday morning Shaun will talk about how ending homelessness shouldn’t cost governments money. “Don’t go to the government and say we need money; go to the government and say we will save you money.” Having co-founded and mentored twelve social enterprises Shaun knows what he is talking about.
All events are at the Trinity United Church, 461 Park Avenue.
